As strawberry season draws to a close I thought I would meditate on my love of strawberries. Yuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
That was me meditating (you know instead of ‘om’).
The sqvirrel is fairly strict about only eating strawberries in season as the pre- and post- and in-the-winter (wtf?!) strawberries just don’t taste as good. And really, he is right. His family also only had strawberries that they picked themselves. We didn’t have pick-your-own strawberries in Cali. Farm stands were practically a dying breed. Cali is ALL ABOUT big agri-business. But that’s another story.
So this year I picked my very first strawberries (last coupla years I’ve been in Portugal). It was very exciting. And easy! The first time we went we forgot that we had an appointment back in the city and were only at the strawberry patch for 20 minutes. During which we picked 5lbs of strawberries! The next time we went back we picked 13lbs!
Here’s what we made with all those lovelies,
- strawberry-rhubarb pie*
- strawberry shortcake*
- strawberries with cream
- strawberry clafoutis
- strawberry chocolate shortcake
- strawberry milkshakes
- strawberry jam
- strawberry basil pesto
- strawberry pie*
Not too bad, eh? And there are some whole in the freezer for future needs.
*made by the sqvirrel. And yes, he makes his own pie crust. God love the man.
And now we’re getting into pick your own blueberry season! Yea!! Not sure which I love more…

Strawberry basil pesto??? Wow!
My hubby makes the pie crust in our family too. That’s a blessing I NEVER take for granted. ;)
